iVolume is Mac-only, but Windows has programs like MP3Gain that do a similar job. I'll agree that Apple's version of this technology sucks, but I'd suggest giving a better program a chance. My collection is mostly classic and alternative rock, not rap, by the way. iVolume fixed almost all of this for me (it can't change levels on tracks with DRM, for instance). My normal shuffle would produce music blaringly loud followed by music startlingly low - because they were on the CD that way. There is no standard for volume levels, so many discs will vary. And starting with CDs from the 90s, the volume gets louder and louder until now. IVolume creates info for the same tag as Sound Check, so you have to turn that feature on in iTunes and on the iPod to make use of it. It's shocking how varied the levels can get with Apple's analysis, with songs on the same album being as much as 10db different.

If you use the program, it will actually show the level that Apple generates with Sound Check in one column, with the level derived by iVolume in another. IVolume is a third-party program that provides Sound Check compatible levels derived from a different algorithm than Apple uses.
